On Saturday, May 5th, we held our 1st Annual "International Midwives Day Family Picnic and Tree Planting Celebration" at Mae Boyar Park in Lakewood, CA. The City of Lakewood so graciously provided us with a young Hong Kong Orchid Tree and a special place in the park to plant it. The Mayor of Lakewood honored the special day with a beautiful Proclamation.
The idea of having a day to recognize and honor midwives came out of the 1987 International Confederation of Midwives conference in the Netherlands. International Midwives Day was first celebrated May 5, 1991, and has been observed annually since then in over 50 nations around the world, and is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO).
We celebrated with a reading of our International Midwives Day Proclamation, planting our "Midwife" Tree, releasing "Lady" Bugs, sharing yummy food, and meeting other like-minded families. It was a really beautiful day!
